その時の写真と、私が被爆二世の種を発芽させて育てている青桐（被爆三世？）の写真を今朝を撮ったのでおくります。またもう一つは被爆夾竹桃を挿し木して育てているものです。

被爆三世青桐は、緑緑して本当に気持をよくしてくれます。

「砂入さんお元気ですか。砂入さんが手配してくださって、ＮＰＯ法人セトラひろしまにおいていた青桐が、室内にあったためか、すでに大きな葉をつけています。このたび、この青桐を再度、前事故があったところに植樹しました。専門家の本山さんが中心になって、琴演奏者の榊さん、セトラひろしまの副理事長の石丸さんとで植えてくださいました。今度は、事故がないようにしっかりとした木枠で木を守ることとしました。世間の荒波で今度こそ、無事に育ち、夏には多くの人の憩いの場を提供してくれればと思います。

もうひとつの写真群は、私の家のベランダにおいていた青桐です。昨年、平和公園にある被爆青桐の種を入手、それを発芽させたものです。寒い冬を越して、今、小さな葉がでようとしています。青桐の鉢の後ろにあるのは、被爆した夾竹桃から枝をとり、それが芽をだし、葉を出したものです。昨年の、広島アート・プロジェクトで出品されたものです。」

"Hi, Hiroshi, how are you? The Chinese Parasol tree you arranged for us to have at NPO Cetra Hiroshima has grown large leaves. Thus, we replanted the seedling on the ground of the park we tried last time someone pulled our tree out. This time around, Mr. Yamamoto, a specialist, Ms. Sekaki who is a Koto player as well as Mr. Ishimaru of Cetra Hiroshima replanted together. This time we protect the plant by having fence around the seedling and we hope that this seedling will grow strong in spite of the difficult time we face and provide a resort of comfort and contemplation in the summer.

The other pictures are of my Chinese Parasol Tree seedling in my balcony. It is the one that I purchased from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and succeeded in getting them sprouted. It now has endured the first winter and starting to grow small leaves. The plant behind my Chinese Parasol Tree seedling in the picture is a seedling grown out of a little branch pruined out of Hibaku Persimmon tree. Last year, I exhibited it in Hiroshima Art Project."

"Hey Hiroshi, I hope you are doing well. I wanted to give you an update on the status of our Hibaku Persimon tree (Lou Lou)

I'm happy to report that this spring Lou Lou grew taller and sprouted new leaves. I decided that this would be a good time to transplant her into a bigger pot. The photos I included were taken by Anna Purves during the transplanting process. Already in the past few days since changing her pot she has sprouted even more leaves. Even though it has been 2 great years, she is still very young and fragile. Right now she requires the support of a little crutch, at least until her trunk grows a bit more. She lives up here in the Bronx with me but has really become a member of the whole family. Recently I have found myself traveling around the world quite often, not knowing when and for how long I would be home for. During this time my parents and little brothers have stepped up and shared the responsibility of caring for our little tree. I will continue showing love and keeping a close eye until she is ready to be planted outside for a more permanent home. I look forward to the day when she can bury her roots deep into the earth and maybe even bear fruit. She is a little beacon of light in my life and I can say with conviction; I love this little tree :) Thanks Hiroshi. The pictures pretty much speak for themselves.."

Further to my last email, have taken a portrait. About this time last year my plants sprouted. Earlier this week my city was flooded (I think the city is usually the blurry mass in the background of my images). It's been a big week and an anxious wait. The river, which winds through the city and past my backyard swelled and broke its banks. Where I'm standing, earlier this week I'd of been standing under water (the paved path isn't usually covered with thick river mud etc).

"Hey Hiroshi

I've been meaning to email for the longest time. Actually, within weeks of my last email. Am happy to report that all of my plants are doing really well, in fact they're thriving.

All except one of the seeds you'd sent had sprouted. The Chinaberries probably got to about 10cm, whereas the Parasols just seemed to struggle. The Parasols very briefly had small leaves, but when they lost their leaves the stems never dried out or appeared entirely dead, they always remained green. So I was just waiting to see. But it was particularly concerning when the Chinaberries started to look like the Parasols. The last time I emailed, the Chinaberries were becoming rather ominious sticks. But then inexplicably, everything changed. And now, even the Parasols are doing well.

Have just snapped and attached a couple of images (Chinaberries are now 30cm tall). Know you'd like an image of us with them, but am sending these in the interim."

How to Germinate Jujube Seeds in GardenGuides.com

Step 1

Pick the jujube fruit in November. Remove the stone from the center of the fruit, and scrub it under running water to remove any excess pulp.

Step 2

Moisten a handful of sand, push the jujube seed into it and place it in a plastic sandwich bag. Seal the bag and place it in the refrigerator where it should remain for 90 days. Check the sand periodically to make sure that it remains moist.

Step 3

Plant the stone 1 inch deep in a sunny area of the landscape in the spring, when the outside temperatures are over 60 degrees F. Cover the seed with soil and keep the soil moist, but not saturated. If you are planting more than one jujube tree, plant the seeds 15 feet apart.

"Hello Hiroshi, I wanted to send you pictures of our Persimmon tree because she's been doing so well this summer!

She was in the show at the Horticultural Society. They took very good care of her. They said she was very healthy. She did have a little bit of a white bug type thing under her leaves and they explained that that often times comes from the soil that we buy in the store. They sprayed her leaves with dish soap and water and the little white bugs left.

We brought her home and I got concerned that the underside of her leaves were going to get the bugs again so I started misting under her leaves. I have no idea if I'm right about this but I feel like it made her feel tickled and good because now she's been growing like crazy!

I've sent 3 pictures. One of them shows a leaf that is not the typical shape. It is kind of heart-shaped. Is this normal for persimmons? There were two and then one grew out into the typical oval leaf shape. The other one is continuing to be the heart-shape. Anyway, look at her grow!! Have a great day. Very sincerely,"

"I’m pretty happy with the progress to this point. I’m not looking to the future. I’m just enjoying the moment. Time shifts and flows, and we can only breathe. This is what I feel to be true.

In my craggy brain there are memories of a small child playing under an ancient Gingko tree in our home in Seoul. My father used to say that the tree was so old that the young boy emperor played beneath the same tree many hundred years ago. Even then I knew it must be a fable. But I loved the sense of connection and history, and I felt I belonged to something much grander than my tiny troubles with my brothers.

Anyway, enough of that. I’m thrilled to see the sprout getting bigger. Thanks for this chance."

"Hello again Hiroshi Sunairi! Here are some pictures of my trees and myself. My boyfriend and I are both artists graduated from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and they've kept us company on the windowsill and inspired us to get a few other plants to raise and enjoy.

The one in the peach colored planter is almost a year old- I remember I planted it in September of last year. It's already been re-potted once, but I think he's just about ready for a larger pot! I keep this one by my studio area and it watches me paint and type on my computer! The one in the green pot is about three months old. This one lives in the kitchen and keeps the potted herbs company. Thank you and I hope to keep better contact with you."

It is OK since Chinese Parasol trees don't like coldness, but the humidity is so high here in Hiroshima. It is not good for us!! The other day, I took some pictures of the second generation of Hibaku Parasol seedlings at NPO Cetra Hiroshima where they are at. In fall, we will replant it on the ground and this time, we will try hard so no one will pull it out of the ground. The ones we sprouted from seeds are in our balcony and they are growing little by little. Growing trees from seeds is like having and seeing kids grow up. It gives us a dream and hope."

"The 5th Blue Sky Project: An International Exhibition--Love, Blue Sky, and Peace Our Theme Is World Peace, Our Motif is the Blue Sky That Envelopes Earth On September 11, 2001, the New York-based art historian Reiko Tomii photographed the tragedy of World Trade Center from her home, and uploaded three photographs for her Japanese friends. After a few years, I looked at her photographs and other documentary photographs, I realized one thing: there was a beautiful blue sky over New York. There was also a beautiful blue sky over Hiroshima on August 6, and over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, when atomic bombs were dropped on these Japanese cities. The blue sky was the backdrop of historic human follies, again and again. Above the clouds, there is the blue sky that envelopes the Earth. We will never make the beautiful blue sky a backdrop of war, nuclear bombing, terrorism, massacre, and other destructive acts. Never again."

A favorite project from this past year is Hiroshi Sunairi's Tree Project. I've documented two previous attempts at growing a seed from the hibaku trees in Hiroshima -- the trees that survived the atomic bomb. "Mr. Sunairi, Early this month of April 14th, I went to the park to see how our Hibaku Parasol Tree was doing, then I couldn't find it, I thought I saw it a while ago. This park had many people gathering for Hanami (in Japanese tradition in the spring time, they do picnick on the ground by blossomed trees). I feel terrible. It has gotten smaller without leaves, so I was afraid someone would step on it or kids playing succor would break the seedling...I looked for it around there for a while... A couple of weeks ago, there had been some sprouts, but the stems were too weak looking and couldn't get the seed-shell off and dried up. This week, this one came out and seem very healthy without shell. In the soil, there are other sprout arches ready to come out. This Platanus (Plane tree) sprout is kind of hairy and cute!!

"Hey Hiroshi! Yay, my Chinaberrys have sprouted. I'm so pleased it's working out. I was always going to plant them, was just a little time poor is all. Considering the previous summer disappeared and this summer came on so quickly, I think I've done pretty well. In fact, my timing was so good that they sprouted within a fortnight, while I was on holidays. Suppose subtropical has this effect.

「お陰様で3Ｘ歳の誕生日を迎えました。
気持ちはまだ推定32歳です。

あと？年で大台を超えるけれどもどのように過ごしているだろう、といろいろイメージをふくらませながらアイデアを書き留めています。

心身共に健康にいるのが一番いいというのが最近のモットーで、食べるものに気をつけてよく歩くようにしています。

せっかくニューヨークにいるので、いろいろ写真でも撮ってレポート出来るようになりたいと思っています。

今回はニューヨーク大学の先生でもある砂入博史さんというアーティストの方のプロジェクトで、広島に投下された原爆で被爆した柿の木の種やその他の樹木の種をもらい、自宅に植えています。これはセンダンという木が種から生えてきたところです。

柿の種は残念ながらまだ発芽しておりません。もし生えてきた場合は数十年後に植えられる土地があるのか、どこに植えるのかを考えるだけでも楽しいです。」

「ＮＹ在住の砂入さんのツリー・プロジェクトで種が送られてきたには6月。7月に柿の芽が出た。その後丁寧に世話しつつ育ててきた。紅葉は室内で育ててきためか遅く、最近ようやく黄色から橙という感じである。また四枚の葉のうち、小さな一枚は飛んでいってしまって今は三枚しか付いていない。

今、砂入りさんのＴｒｅｅＰｒｏｊｅｃｔの個展（グループ展）がＮＹで開かれている。私のところの柿の芽が出た頃の緑鮮やかな写真も関連して展示されているようである。今日は、この橙色の柿の写真を掲載してその個展へのメッセージとしたい。センダンと青桐はまだ芽が出てきません。もうだめのようですが春まで水をくれ続けてみます。」

I actually have two Red Maples in the back yard of our modest suburban bungalow in Saskatoon. I call them the “Two Sisters”. The Big Sister is bigger, taller and more robust but her color is more varied, (more yellows, oranges, as well as red). In contrast “Little Sister” is absolutely crimson red, -- in the extreme !!

Here are a few snapshots. I hope you get the picture of why we like to grow trees. These red maples are not really hardy in this climate but they have “toughened up” and they give us a lot of joy in the fall when they turn color."

Hiroshi I live in western Washington and my home is in the middle of a forest mostly Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) trees. At the moment I have some Douglas Fir seeds collected over the last few weeks. I don't sell them but send them to anyone interested in starting them. I start many species from seed mostly conifers. Temporarily, the Parasol Tree stayed in Mr. Takesawa's friend's place.

Now Mr. Takesawa got a permission from the city of Hiroshima to plant Hibaku Chinese Parasol Tree in Fukuromachi Kouen (park) in central Hiroshima. Mr. Takesawa (the third person from left) planted Parasol seedling along with Mr. Ishimaru (left), Ms. Kimie Sakaki (2nd left) and Mr. Takesawa's wife.
